According to James, the brother of Jesus, tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life. With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God. From the same mouth comes blessing and cursing. (James 3:6, 9-10) But this must not be so. This would be a tragic mixture of holiness and ungodliness, spirit and flesh. The Bible teaches us however that we cannot serve two masters for we will love the other while despise the other, and let your yes be yes and no be no. Anything in between is of the devil. So we cannot both curse people that we hate while keep on believing that we bless God's name. This is a very difficult thing to do, I know. But the Psalmist set a perfect example by teaching us to guard our self and the words we say. If we share the word of God, our action must be in coherence with our preaching, for the Bible tells us that you shall know them by their fruits.
While we are still sojourning in this imperfect, sinful and fallen world, we are still under the influence of sin, but we can avoid sin by always keeping our guards up. How? The Bible also teach us to set our minds and hearts on things above and look unto Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith.
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, think about these things. (Philippians 4:8)
